Explosion Investigation and Analysis
WERC engineers investigate explosions involving electrical failures, natural gas, propane, flammable liquids, steam, and other equipment and processes. Regardless of the size or type of loss, we approach the investigation meticulously, using scientific methodology.
One of the challenges faced in explosion and fire cases is pulling divergent parties together for laboratory work. Clients and opposing parties have appreciated WERC’s provision of an amicable working environment, internet access to home offices and solid leadership. Our well-equipped laboratory allows us to inspect and test products and equipment to determine if there is a defect and/or problem that may have caused the explosion.
We examine, test, and disassemble electrical components and gas equipment, including: ranges, boilers, furnaces, room heaters, water heaters, wall heaters, construction heaters, dryers, gas controls, regulators, and relief valves.
In addition, our engineers frequently conduct custom or specialized tests and demonstrations of products and equipment that are used at trial to educate and prove to jurors that theories of explosion causation are scientifically accurate. Educating the clients and jurors on the technical issues of a case is one of our top priorities.
WERC’s investigative process generally involves:
- Determining the fuel source
- Checking gas systems
- Measuring leak flow rates
- Locating leaks
- Obtaining samples for chemical composition and odorant analysis
- Testing appliances and components
- Laboratory testing to demonstrate, verify, or refute failure theories
- Reviewing industry practices and code compliance
