David T. Burnett, MS, PE is a civil/structural engineer specializing in residential and heavy timber construction. He evaluates commercial and residential buildings with structural and/or performance problems. He is experienced in wood identification, historic and current lumber grading rules, wood/moisture relationships, and wood decay and preservation.
Mr. Burnett specializes in conventional residential construction and heavy timber post-and-beam construction. He has evaluated failure modes associated with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery loaded in tension. He has also conducted many engineering investigations of foundation and slab movement, water infiltration, vehicle impact, fire and hail damage, and overloading from gravity and/or lateral loads.
Mr. Burnett has experience in positively identifying over forty species of hardwoods and softwoods found in the United States. He also has experience with sorting, grading, and kiln drying operations. He has investigated historic grading rules and allowable design values to assist in the structural evaluation of historic buildings. Mr. Burnett has investigated numerous wood structures involving moisture problems and decay. He is capable of performing field tests that detect incipient decay in wood members.
